Robb Reviews - Watchmen

Okay, a proper review of Watchmen.

A complex, multi-layered mystery adventure, “Watchmen” is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the “Doomsday Clock” – which charts the USA’s tension with the Soviet Union – is set at five minutes to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed-up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion – a ragtag group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers – Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Their mission is to watch over humanity…but who is watching the Watchmen?

Okay, I admit that I copied and pasted the above text from the press kit because it essentially summed up what the plot is about without spilling you any storyline. But what I will share with you is a little profile of our heroes in the movie.

Now in general, none of them are superhuman except for the blue guy which I'll come to later. They're just physically fit and strong. And by fit and strong, they can still be overwhelmed in numbers but it still takes awhile before you can apprehend them.

The Comedian is very funny name for a hero if you ask me. Lol. He's strong, chauvinistic, realistic and down to earth. Well, too down to earth cause he gives in to his desires and emotions too often. His role in the movie is a passive one. Find out why when you watch it. He's strong but not immortal as you'll definitely find out.

Nope. This guy is not Batman though I sure they look alike. Lol. He's Nite Owl (why the fuck someone wants to be an owl? Lol). He has a nice costume, a nice flying ride but.. he has grown fat throughout the years if you ask me. Lol. He's not the most good looking one but somehow, he gets the chick. *Shrugs* He's rather strong, but not the strongest physically.

Next we have.. not Robin, Batman's boy slave. Lol. He's Ozymandias (where the fuck do you get a name like this?). He was inspired by the life of Alexander the Great to take on the costumed identity of Ozymandias. Having trained his body to athletic perfection, he operated for only a few years before retiring, revealing his secret identity publicly, and building a financial empire based around his past as a costumed hero. He's the strongest mortal hero in the movie and also claimed the smartest man as well.

Rorschach (pronounced as Ro-shack) is a very interesting hero. He's paranoid, he talks to himself, he's dangerous. Yes, and his mask is so creepy you'll get terrified watching his mask. He's very strong and stubborn in doing what he believes in. I personally think his role in the movie is the most entertaining and worthwhile compared to the others. Watch how he treats the bad guys, he's so damn good with his job.

Silk Spectre's role is just to be a pretty girl so everyone has a pussy to look at. Her role is not very significant despite that she's strong for a girl. Seriously, you can just take her role off and no one would even notice her (very biased statement since I'm gay. Lol).

This blue guy is Dr Manhattan. He's the guy with the most awesome powers. He was ripped into particles in a science experiment gone horribly wrong. But his consciousness lived on, and he managed to reassemble himself as a true superhuman, a glowing blue model of physical perfection, able to see the future and alter matter all the way down to the subatomic level. His presence profoundly affects not just his fellow heroes, but also global scientific and geopolitical affairs. In other words, he's like a god, capable of creating and destroying in an instance.

Funny role he play in the movie, but no doubt, significant. Also, as he's naked most of the time, they blur dick all the time. Lol. And there's also a lesbian scene that they censored out. Lol

All in all, Watchmen is a movie that requires the audience to do a little bit of thinking rather than the average superhero show like Spidey and Hulk. It's very intellectual challenging and it's good in my opinion. It doesn't require too much thinking like The Reader or something, but it's good enough to separate itself from linear plot in ordinary superhero movies.

Cheers
Robb

nice review. i thought it was a great movie--especially the semi-historical opening sequence.

did you notice... when rorschach and nite owl hack into adrian's computer, one of the files was "boys"? i noticed it immediately and wondered.. i went online just now and found that it was done purposefully to suggest adrian was gay.

didn't read the full thing 'cos i know that you love spoilers. haha. but noticed that you asked "where the fuck do you get a name like this?" in reference to ozymandias. i think ozymandias is a name used for an egyptian pharaoh (ramses II), but when fictionalised, kinda refers to a character who has all the knowledge in the world. or access to this knowledge or sth.

oh and hermann rorschach is the name of the swiss psychoanalyst who developed that famous inkblot test (where they show you symmetrical inkblot shapes and ask you what you see in them).

=)

Mosilian: The 'boys' folder was done in reference to a scene in the comic where Rorscharch made a comment along the lines of 'possibly homosexual. must investigate further'. They didn't include that in the movie, but I was pleasantly surprised to see the folder. :P

I kept thinking that the guy who played the Comedian was Javier Bardem (I found out later that it's actually Jeffrey Dean Morgan), but the two actors definitely look alike
