Saving Money

Short Joke/Cheesy Phrase
Zach said he burnt his tongue when he licked me.

His justification - I am hot. =.=

------------

It's official. I'm now a thrifty bastard. No more luxurious lunches and meals and wasteful trips on weekends. I'm now determined to save as much as I can at the minimum of RM300 each month for the next 1 year at least.

Goodbye durian pancake. T_T

durian+pancake

Reason? I aim to get my own place in 5 years time and I'm aiming for at least 25 grand for my down payment. That means I'll need to save more as time goes by. Hopefully this will become a reality for me.

Of course, this is easier said than done. I've started my thriftiness for this past week and man it wasn't easy at all. Not joining Nuffies for lunch is like sticking a thorn up my skin. It felt so uncomfortable. I miss our bonding sessions for lunch. :(

But I can only afford RM5 lunches one or twice on the weekdays while the rest of the days, I'll be on bread brought from home. That's how thrifty I've gotten. So that's 1 week down, and 259 weeks to go (5 years countdown). I think by the end of it, I'd have waged war against bread due to boredom and there will be a lot of casualties along the road.

piles of bread
I wonder how many breads would have died then...

--------------------

Seriously, this is the first time in my life that I've started saving money. Yes, you heard me right. For the past 23 years (Fuck, I'm old!) I've never bothered saving money at all. On the contrary I was very good at spending money in which I've never failed to empty my vault every month be it when I was a student or the past year when I've started working. Yes, I'm a pretty poor planner.

But I guess that's also why I've lived so happily all this while because I really went all out to make myself a happier person. ;)

--------------------

I know that most of my readers are pretty young in general, but there are of course some who are wiser in terms of financial management. Can you share with me your experience of savings and perhaps even investing your savings efficiently? I took a look at all those funds and schemes from local banks but it seems that there is no point transferring your money from savings to those funds due to the fact that the interest rate is still freaking low.

I apologize for the low frequency of updates as the Internet in both my house and office have been pretty unreliable lately. As such, I often give up trying to load my blog edit page before I burst up in anger smashing my monitor. I'll do my best however to blog as much as I can and put those posts in draft so I can publish them from time to time, okay?

P.S. If you don't get the short joke at the top, you're a dimwit.

Cheers
Robb

good luck in your saving "project"! :D My friend taught me this good idea of saving money. that is to save a RM 1 note everyday. It may be a little and seem pointless at the beginning, but think of it in long term. RM 1 x 365 days = RM 365! And it's really nice to see the number of RM 1 notes growing :P

robbie, you sure u can handle it or not? Now im trying to save money also..planning to go Phuket at the end of the year..but dude, honestly i tell u, it's harder than it looks :)

hey robb, the durian pancake looks tempting...where did you get it again?

Tried the open another savings account and deposit like 10% of your salary each month before you spend it method yet? I haven't because I simply am too lazy to open another account but I really think you should try it! Some people swear by it!

And read this blog! http://www.thesimpledollar.com/

It's really interesting and the blogger is writing a series on how to live thriftily! (Or you could buy his book, "365 ways to live cheap" but you ARE trying to be thrifty here, right?)

I don't know how others do it but this is how I do it. Set aside 1k per month since i got my first job and always pretended I only earn (salary minus 1k) and survive with that little money. And honestly, I actually can spend money on things i love too!!

Chingy said...

Hm, I think you should not eat bread everyday. Sure sien one.

So hor; cook your own food or make own sandwiches! Or salads etc.

23 is not old! lol
and saving money is good!
to save more money, don't spend unnecessarily! make lesser calls and smses.. don't go to the gym? workout at home is an alternative.. ask boss for raise! lol

those are just suggestions.. not necessarily to be followed.. =P

alternatively, ask for more pay. :P

seriously speaking, i only start saving money when i met my 2nd boyfriend (which is by the time i'm 23 years old). he is the one that taught me how to save and save every penny that i could possibly do without starving myself.

and he taught me how to use my overdraft to earn interest from the bank by saving them in fixed deposits.

Robb said...

happy ribbons: thanks for the sharing! I might wanna do that too! :D

kenson: i know. believe me i know.

crystal : refer the answer i gave daydreamer? lazy to copy and paste. hehehe

kevin: i have multiple bank accounts now which is why i have initiated my savings plan. :D

cmate: u must earn a lot w/o any commitment then. house rental, gym fees, utilities, loan repayment and tribute to parents are among my montly commitments. quite scary if u ask me. i can't set aside 1k and continue living.

chingy: agree. :D salad sounds good.

anone: hahaha. yeap

anonymous: my hairdresser ain't that high class anyway. i can still afford once a month i think

kenwooi: cannot, house doesn't really have the facilities. gym is something that i will not cut on unless it's life and death

ky: pretty unfair if you ask me. it's my own initiative to save and it has ntg to do with my salary. i really dun see why from the boss' point of view to raise an employee's salary just because he suddenly have plans for his future. lol. besides, i'm pretty satisfied with my salary, it's just that i'm looking at a bigger picture

cindy: overdraft? ain't that a bad thing? sorry my financial understanding is not quite clear. lol

What I do is direct 10% of my slary into a separate account. I only have lunch with my co-workers 1 or 2 times a week. And I do my drinking before I go clubbing!!

Most important is to get on the property ladder early.

You can actually buy property with 0% downpayment if you go for a new unit without completion.

It's pretty easy for youngsters to get a loan (those under 30) as long as your salary is more than RM1700.

When you buy a new property the developer will mark the S+P price up 10% so you will only actually have to pay 90% meaning no deposit.

You just need enough money for the other expenses like lawyer fees etc.

Health/Life insurance is also something important to consider and much cheaper if you get started early (before 25).

Take care of those two first, when you have money left after that consider savings and investments.

clayden: 23 is old. nearing unclehood. T_T

ben pek: cheers to that!

john: 10% of salary is good. i think i might aim for that as it's more feasible than the current 20% i'm doing

gareth: many thanks for you insightful information. i truly appreciate em. :)

i think u earn quite little money a month rite? Not until 2,000? I think thats wat happen when u don't hav a degree la. Average fresh graduates like all my friends, can save like Rm1000 per month. Still they can eat rice for at least 2 meals per day la. On the good side, u are gay, so u don hav to like get married, contribute to family as to ur wife and children. If you don't buy condom, i think u can save more. But i don think u can eat bread long term la, u r not one of the guys, it takes a lot of education and a lot of physics to acheive tat for long terms.Maybe u shud find a job, a real job tat might pay u better.

Anonymous said...

ah, i figured ur salary is only 1500. Minus accomodation, transport and play. I don't think u have much left. See, ppl like me with a degree is just so much smarter. And from a good family as well. We can live a good life. And don nid to lick asshole. where shit flows.

Robb said...

keep guessing my pay for all i care. no1's stupid enough to reveal it publicly. hehehe.

let's just say i am comfortable with my salary but i do wish to achieve more in life rather than being comfortable in the mean time w/o future plans. for all i care i can screw savings and party every week and continue my luxurious lunch daily, but i merely choose not to. ;)

and for licking assholes, geez, i wonder where we came from. dad's dick ain't that clean either ain't it? urine shared the same outlet and not to mention most of us are not C-section and we came thru a vagina ain't it? don't see u complaining abt that? lol

Robb said...

and yes i do envy those who come from well to do families. especially if their parents can afford to pay their tertiary education for full which means they don't have to be burdened by study loans and any sort.

lady luck is by ur side when you're born it seems. thanks for letting me know that you and ur frens are luckier, mate. life's unfair and i reckon most of us found out by now.

real job? hmm i am considering that. i have experiences with lots of 'real' jobs u know? blow and hand for example? lol.

some of us are just hard working, we obtain scholarships. While some of us obtain ptptn loans n go private, which is also good, becuz we have foresight to see tat the loan we take is an investment worthwhile, becuz we wont hav to be stuck with 1500 forever. some of us are managed to get in local uni, which is cheap. there are many ways. Just tat some ppl din do them, no foresight.

Robb said...

hehe, tell me about scholarships. wld love to talk about em being a receiver of a few.

i'd have to disappoint u to inform that my salary is not what you've expected but it doesn't mean i have to share it as evidently sharing too much of your own information is no doubt easily misunderstood by some quarters.

at any rate, i do acknowledge your freedom of speech to put across ur opinion but i hope the same liberty is given to me as i put across the point that i've made decisions in my life and i'm proud of my life.

this post is merely written to share my thoughts of planning ahead for my financial security in the future so i decided to start saving drastically because i wanna achieve it faster and not as rant that i'm not getting paid enough.

any further comments which fail to see pass this point will be removed as i grew tired of making my point over and over again.
